Student Services
The Student Services Team provides a friendly and professional service to help all students at Calderdale College.

Impartial student Advisors are available to give information about college courses and provide initial guidance to help you decide which course is best for you.

Financial
advice and assistance is provided if you need help with childcare, equipment, fees or travel (see support funds).

Careers and Student Advisors can give you the necessary help and guidance you need when you are progressing onto further and higher education or employment.

If you need someone to talk to Student Services provide a confidential supportive listening service, with referral to outside agencies where appropriate.

A member
of the team can take on the role of advocate if you find yourself in a situation where you would like somebody to speak on your behalf (for example in a disciplinary).

Student Services is situated in B15 of the Percival Whitley Centre site and the telephone number is 01422 399367. The opening times are as follows:

Monday to Wednesday 10.00am – 4.00pm
Thursday 10.00am – 7.00pm
Friday 10.00am – 4.00pm

We are also open until 7.00pm every 1st Wednesday of the month to offer advice and guidance.

Careers Advice
The careers advice at Calderdale College is able to plan ahead for your life after college, whether it is employment or university you are aiming for. We want to ensure that you complete your course having a clear and realistic career plan for the future. A personal advisor from Calderdale and Kirklees Careers is available offering impartial advice to help you consider further education, higher education, employment and training. The careers room, which contains a library of free information on jobs, courses and job seeking, plus computer aided guidance programme is situated opposite Student Services on B floor – room B11.

Leisure Recreation & Student Enrichment activities
A range of sports and leisure facilities are available, catering for a range of abilities. These include football rugby, netball, table football and pool. There is also a fitness suite with facilities for aerobics, weights, circuit training, treadmills and boxing.

Wednesday afternoons provide dedicated time for student enrichment activities.
This year the activities include:

It is recommended that students sign up early, as places are limited. Any students wishing to participate in other activities should contact Millennium Volunteers on B floor of the Percival Whitley Centre, here at Calderdale College.

Support Funds
Calderdale College invests in lifelong learning and aims to assist, where possible, learners who are facing financial difficulties. The Learner Support Fund has been set up in an attempt to break down financial barriers to study.

The Fund comprises of:
Learner support funds – to help students experiencing financial difficulties (does not include HE students).

Percival Whitley Educational Trust – a limited fund donated to support and enhance academic and personal development.

Access to Learning – a limited fund to help full and part time Higher Education students.

Manchester LEA – childcare support for 16-18 year olds.

Financial help may also be available for:
· Travel to college
· Course fees
· Equipment
· Childcare

Drug awareness project
The drugs awareness project aims to increase education and awareness of students in the issues surrounding drugs and alcohol. This work includes the effects, risks, identification, the law and what further help is available in Halifax and nationally.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

If you are 16 years old and your parent’s household income is less than £30,000, you may be able to claim a weekly allowance of up to £30.00 per week.

Once you have your Notification of Entitlement for EMA, your payment will be dependant on your weekly attendance at college, you must do a minimum of 12 hours guided learning.

Do not hesitate apply now for your EMA by telephoning the Assessment Payment Body on 0808 10 62 19 or visit the website www.ema.dfes.gov.uk , alternatively you can contact the EMA Administrator on 01422 357357 ext 9930. You don’t have to be enrolled at college to apply for an EMA.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)
An Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is intended to help adults studying full time with the costs of learning. The grant pays up to £30 per week (subject to
financial assessment) for full time learners who are:

  • - Studying at least 450 glh per academic year
  • - Aged 19 or over
  • - Studying their first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification
  • - Not in receipt of out of work benefits
