NEW
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
ACADEMY IN
LEAGUE OF ITS OWN
Calderdale
College’s
new Women’s
Football Academy
will be in a league
of its own, thanks
to the backing of
England player Sue
Smith.
Sue,
a member of England’s
senior team since
1996 with
53 caps and 13 goals
to her name, will
be teaching fitness
and conditioning
at the new Academy
which is set to kick
off in September.
Girls
aged 16 – 19
will be able to combine
top-level football
coaching from former
Sheffield Wednesday
player, Des Hazel,
with academic and
vocational qualifications.
A-levels, GNVQs and
BTECs are all on
offer, with the option
of continuing into
higher education
or specialised employment.
There are 25 places
available on the
two-year course following
trials in May. More
information is available
from Des Hazel on
01422 357357.
“Women’s
football is the fastest
growing sport in
the country and the
World Cup in 2007
will make it even
more high profile”,
said Sue Smith. “The
Calderdale College
Women’s Football
Academy will allow
girls to continue
their commitment
to a game they love,
without sacrificing
academic or vocational
studies.”
“There are
a good number of
girls playing locally,
particularly attached
to Sunday League
clubs”, added
coach, Des Hazel. “All
the Football Academy
matches will take
place during the
week and the coaching
that players get
here can only benefit
the clubs in their
weekend games.”
